Lexington, MA—March 3, 2026 – A new national study from College Guidance Network (CGN) reveals a startling paradox in education technology: even among school counselors eager to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI), two-thirds fear it will actually add to their daily burden.
The research shows that while 24% of counselors fully support adopting an AI advisor model, 67% of those same supporters believe AI tools will increase their workload rather than reduce it. This “trust tax”—the time required to vet and fact-check AI-generated advice—remains a primary barrier to successful integration.
“Counselors are at a breaking point with caseloads; they cannot afford technology that requires constant auditing,” said Jon Carson, CEO of College Guidance Network. “This data proves that for AI to improve a counselor’s life, it must be grounded in expert-vetted data that is trustworthy from day one. That is why we trained EVA with over 400 national experts—to ensure AI acts as a professional ally, not an administrative chore”.
Key Finding of the Report:
- The Experience Factor: Contrary to common tech-adoption myths, experienced counselors view AI as more of a certainty than their newer colleagues. 73% of experienced counselors believe AI integration is inevitable over the next three years, compared to just 51% of early-career counselors.
A System Under Strain
The study highlights an “impossible math” problem in schools. With caseloads averaging more than 300:1, the average counselor has only about one hour per year for individual guidance with each student.
A New Model: AI Trained by Experts
To address this trust barrier, CGN developed EVA (Expert Virtual Assistant), the first AI college and career counseling agent trained by more than 400 national experts in admissions, financial aid, and adolescent development. EVA is designed to reinforce—not replace—counselor judgment, extending a counselor’s reach through personalized student roadmaps and real-time alerts while ensuring the professional remains in the lead.
About the Study
The study analyzed the perspectives of 1,606 school counselors to identify the drivers of technology adoption and professional identity. A follow-up study focused specifically on “AI Promoters” to understand the practical challenges of implementation. Download the results here.
